Gilmore Guy Was A Bully Magnet
May 2001
Although Chad Michael Murray plays Chilton's resident loud-mouthed jerk Tristan Du Grey, the 20-year-old actually grew up a bully-magnet and hopes to use his experiences to help others.

When J-14 caught up with the Gilmore Girls hottie, he'd recently finished a WB press party and told us about fans who assume he's just like his TV prep boy persona. Once they talk to the blue-eyed star for a few minutes, "their whole perspective changes," he laughs. "They were like, 'You're not like you are on TV.'"

No doubt about that. In fact, the only trait that Chad shares with his character is self-confidence. "Tristan carries a confidence of just not minding what other people think about him," Chad says. "And I think I gave it to him personally, because I have that kind of confidence, too."

Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, Chad grew up both a football fanatic and punching bag. "From first to sixth grade, I got my two front teeth knocked out and I was picked on every day of my life, because my mom used to dress me up in Sunday's finest," he confesses. By the time he hit 8th grade, Chad had a different problem -- his uncool haircut. "The kids called me greaser," he remembers. There was also one guy in particular -- a football teammate -- who got his picking on the up-and-comer. "I think he had it in for me, because he got in this fight and I stepped in and I stopped it."

Chad chose to deal with these tough situations by talking with his father and blowing it off. "Bullies are no better than you are," he says. "Nobody is better than anybody, and bullies in particular are obviously not very secure with themselves if they have to find somebody to pick on."

Chad dreams of the day that he becomes a major Hollywood player, though his dreams have little to do with stardom and lots to do with making a difference. "I want to get to a point where kids can look up to and listen to me," he says. "I want people to feel good about who they are."

Gilmore Girls is on Thursday nights at 8 on The WB. Any scoop on upcoming episodes? "Things are gonna get very interesting," says Chad.
